Like a lot of foodies I'm always on the lookout for a tasty way to eat. Just recently Food Network started it's Burger Week special (and some of these burgers look mighty good.) Unfortunately just as my mouth started watering at the prospect of grilling some burgers (It's also grilling week this week) I caught wind of a ground beef recall and all of a sudden I started thinking that maybe ribs and dogs were the way to go this week. Let's take a moment to look at these two stories (especially if you have any questions about the recall) and how the media can cause sales to spike, or to drop and how one distributor is working to make sure no single product can put his business out of business.
It pays to know what the media is saying, those of you who haven't been upselling your retail clients by pointing out the blitz burgers have been getting on Food Network and the normal upswing from the holiday weekends may have been missing out. Looking for an easy upsell? Pick a few of the side dish recipes shown on major media outlets and package items to match. Trying to get a restaraunt to try something new? Suggest a few alternate recipes for Turkey, Lamb, Salmon or Pork burgers to your buyers. | |
| Of course not all the news is good news. Keep on top of the news and act proactively rather than reactively. If you're not affected by a recall get on the horn and see if you can find customers who were that need product to fill the void the recalled product creates. (Watch your credit terms though.) If you are affected by a recall move to put out any fires immediately and make sure your customers don't have to go out shopping for stock. | ![]() |
Be ready for a recall or be ready to close up shop.
