Issue 195 - Can Your Customers Find You?

As a food business owner you have probably invested a fair amount of time and money trying to find customers, and working to make it easy for customers to find you.  This may be in the form of attending trade shows, advertising in directories and guides, or good old fashioned marketing collateral.  We're going to look at one method of advertising many food distributors miss, despite having over 80% of the market share for searches world wide.

You read that right folks, 8 out of 10 people turn to the same source when searching for information.  Where do they look?  http://www.google.com

DON'T STOP READING YET!

For those of you who almost closed the newsletter when you heard the "G" word, we're not going to talk about Google's pay-to-advertise features, we're going to talk about the simple business directory listings.  Which you should check even if you don't like Google, because it may be listing incorrect contact information for your business.  For a growing segment of the population this online search tool has replaced the paper phonebook and directory assistance lines, so you better make sure your information is right.

Let me show you an example using my own business FoodConnex by Integrated Management Solutions.

Take a look at the two search results below for a before and after of updating our business listing information.

After Updating Listing

You've probLeaving your winnings on the table.ably already noticed, but if you missed it my phone, address, details, website, and company information was incomplete or wrong.  This mis-information is picked up by Google from other directories and websites, as well as from user input and searches.  So it is critically important that you check on this information regularly.  They might be mistakenly listing a competitors phone number, or the company information from the last distributor who rented the warehouse you are now in, until you check, you just don't know.

So here's how to check and update or add your directory listing:
(If you prefer to delegate computer work now is the time to hit forward and
attach a note saying, "Take care of this".)

First visit Google maps and search to see if you already have a listing.  Click here and search by your company name, and location information.

If you find a listing for your company click the "More Info" line and you will find an "Edit" button.  You can see the edit link in the first image, it's just under "Get Directions".  Follow the simple instructions from Google and update your listing with the correct information.

If you do not find a listing for your company you can add it by clicking here.  This will help make sure that potential customers can find your phone number and address when they want to contact you.

I hope you find this little tip handy. I know I want to make the most of every marketing dollar I spend, and when a customer remembers the name Food Connex or Integrated Management Solutions, I want them to be able to find me so I can earn there business, I believe you feel the same way.

Marketing is a throw of the dice.
Marketing can be a throw of the dice,
do everything you can to be sure they fall in your favour.

Just a quick note...

We already had a number of email responses to this
newsletter saying readers have found that thier company information on Google
was incorrect, and that they were submitting the changes. I wanted to add on a
note that changes submitted may take a short time to work through the system.
So don't worry if the listing does not update as soon as you submit the
correction.

Thanks for all your Feedback!

Solution:  Everyday activities like sending customers copies of past invoices waste time and materials.  Worse they often interrupt core business processes like order entry creating a domino effect of additional cost and increasing the likelihood of errors and mistakes.  By reducing the labor impact of these procedures you recover bottom line profitability and improve the performance of your employees.
